Neck Pain (whiplash) |
Neck pain after a car accident is commonly referred to as "whiplash". This is characterized by neck pain, spasm and/or stiffness after an auto accident caused by a sudden forward, backward, or side movement of the head. This sudden movement can cause tearing of the muscles and ligaments in the neck causing what is referred to as sprain or strain injuries. This may also include injury to spinal joints, spinal discs, and nerve roots. Pain may be immediate or may be delayed for several days or weeks following the accident. Symptoms can also include headaches, dizziness, abnormal sensation in the shoulder, arms, and hands (numbness, tingling), shoulder pain, back pain, difficulty sleeping, fatigue, and depression.
Treatment includes hot and cold packs, acupressure (medical massage) therapy, acupuncture stimulation, and herbal care. Exercises and light physical therapy may also be needed to restore full range of motion.
Neck pain usually gradually subsides with several weeks to months of treatment. Non-treatment of this injury may result in permanent loss of range of motion and persistent pain and headaches.
